Shalane Flanagan was not born the last time an American won the New York City Marathon.

Too Old?

In a week (and time) when athletes older than 30 are seen as past their prime and incapable of astonishing feats in their fields, Shalane Flanagan brought the NYC Marathon trophy back to America for the first time since 1977.

The last American to win the race was Miki Gorman. Gorman began running, ironically, at 33 years old, with her last win coming at 42.
